What is a Sciatica? Sciatica is a common type of pain that affects the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that extends from the lower back down each leg. When this nerve is affected, it can cause a number of pains in the lower back, hip, and all the way down the leg into the feet. Common signs of sciatica are:

  • Burning down the leg
  • Tingling down the leg
  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Shooting Pain
  • Dull Pain

Sciatica is usually affected on only one side of the lower body with pain starting in the low back and extending down the leg. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected and the degree to which it is affected, patients may experience all kinds of variations of leg pain. This kind of pain can cause difficulties in day-to-day activities such as bending forward to pick something up or simply shifting your body. It can even make sitting a challenge. Sciatica can essentially cripple a person if it gets bad enough, which is why it is important to take steps in treating sciatica.

Other Causes of Sciatica

So, what is causing the sciatic nerve to be affected? Until you come in, we don't know, but generally, it could be a few things:

  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis - Which is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease - The breaking down of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae.
  • Slipped or Bulging Disc - When the disc membrane breaks, and the inside substance is forced out and puts pressure on the nerve.
  • Spondylolisthesis - When a vertebra slips forward over another one.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Muscle Spasms.
